Questions people ask

Can you see lava at Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park right now?

Only during an eruptive episode. Kīlauea erupts in bursts of a few hours at Halemaʻumaʻu crater, then pauses. Episode 56 lasted about six hours on November 5, 2026. Check the USGS cameras before you drive.

How much is a volcano tour on the Big Island?

Group day tours from Kona start around $239 a person. Private tours run about $1,600 to $2,310 for the vehicle. Day trips from Oahu with flights start at $549 a person.

Do I need a tour to visit the volcano?

No. You can drive in for $30 a car. A tour makes most sense from Kona, where the park is 2.5 to 3 hours away each way, or if you want a guide to explain what you are seeing.

Hilo or Kona for a volcano trip?

Hilo is about an hour from the park. Kona is 2.5 to 3 hours. From Kona, a guided tour or a night near the park is easier than a 6-hour round-trip drive.
